Executive Officers & Board of Trustees


Adam Rubin, MD

President

Dr. Rubin is an Associate Professor of Dermatology, Pediatrics, and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. There he directs the adult and pediatric nail clinics, and practices at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.   He specializes in nail disorders, nail surgery, and histopathology of the nail unit.

Dr. Rubin is the lead editor for the 4th edition of Scher and Daniel’s Nails:  Diagnosis, Therapy, Surgery. He is an author of the 3rd and 4th editions of the Atlas and Synopsis of Lever's Histopathology of the Skin, and an associate editor of the 11th and 12th editions of Lever's Histopathology of the Skin.  He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology and for Pediatric Dermatology.  Additionally, he is an Assistant Editor for Dermatologic Surgery and an Assistant Section Editor for JAMA Dermatology. 

Dr. Rubin directs the annual European Nail Society Nail Histopathology Workshop and is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Society for Dermatopathology.  He has served as the Secretary-Treasurer and Treasurer of the Council for Nail Disorders.  He was elected as the Chair of the Auditing Committee of the International Nail Society and has also been elected as Chair-elect of the American Medical Association Specialty and Service Society Caucus Governing Council.  Additionally, Dr. Rubin has served as the President of the Philadelphia Dermatological Society, and as the Overall Program Chair of the 99th Annual Atlantic Dermatology Conference, which occurred in April 2022.

Shari Lipner, MD, PhD

Vice President

Dr. Lipner is an Associate Professor of Clinical Dermatology and an Associate Attending Physician at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. She completed her undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Lipner completed her medical training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she received both M.D. and Ph.D degrees and graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. She completed her residency training in Dermatology at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Dr. Lipner is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, and is deputy chair of the Public Education Committee. She is a member of the Women’s Dermatologic Society, and Council for Nail Disorders, where she serves as Board of Director and chair of multiple committees. She is also the President of The Dermatologic Society of Greater New York and co-chaired the Atlantic Dermatological Conference in 2019. She is the recipient of multiple honors and awards including the AAD Academic Dermatology Leadership Program Award, Women’s Dermatologic Society Mentorship Award, Weill Cornell Leadership in Academic Medicine Program Award, and the JAAD Editorial Mentorship Award.


Dr. Lipner is board certified in Dermatology and has a wide range of clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of skin disorders. She is an expert in nail disorders, including fungal diseases, and nail tumors. She is also the Primary Investigator on clinical trials utilizing novel treatments for nail disorders, and is able to offer alternative treatments to patients who have failed traditional therapies. Dr. Lipner has authored over one hundred fifty peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, lectures nationwide, and is a frequently sought out by the media for her expertise.

Tracey Vlahovic, DPM

Secretary

Dr. Vlahovic is a graduate of Yale University with a BS in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and received her podiatric medical degree from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, Philadelphia, PA.  After finishing her surgical residency at St Luke’s University Health Network in Allentown, PA, she was the first podiatrist in the US to complete a fellowship in podiatric dermatology under the supervision of Stephen Schleicher, MD.  Currently, she is a Clinical Professor and J. Stanley and Pearl Landau Faculty Fellow at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia and a member of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow).  She is an adjunct professor in the Department of Microbiology, Temple University School of Medicine. 

She is board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and board certified in podiatric medicine by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Vlahovic currently teaches the Fundamentals of Dermatology course at Temple and has received numerous teaching awards. She has authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, co-authored the texts: “Skin Disease of the Lower Extremities: A Photographic Guide,” and “Onychomycosis: An Illustrated Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment” (along with CND member Antonella Tosti, MD) , and is involved in multiple clinical research trials for various dermatological therapies and devices.


Thomas Knackstedt, MD

Treasurer

Dr. Thomas Knackstedt received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his residency training in dermatology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, serving as chief resident his final year. In 2016, he completed his fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology at Dermatology Professionals, Inc of Rhode Island. Dr. Knackstedt received extensive training with an emphasis on surgical technique, complex facial reconstruction, and nail surgery.

He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on skin cancer surgery, nail disease, and facial reconstruction. He serves on multiple professional committees of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgery where he is also the editor of the reference library bibliography and host of a monthly dermatologic surgery podcast titled “Conversations in Mohs Surgery”. He is engaged in medical education, clinical research, and regularly presents at regional, national, and international meetings.
